Artist Statement

Wood and metal are the primary components of my work. The warmth and appearance of wood is seductive; the complexity of making a functional object out of this material motivates me. I incorporate metal due to its strength and permanence. My intimacy with these materials enables me to express my appreciation for my surroundings—the everyday structures most of us take for granted. My goal is to seduce the viewer with intricate details of assemblage.

Having been raised in a construction-filled, creative environment, I am influenced by the architectural components of bridges, boats, stadiums, houses and industrialized objects. With awareness to detail, visual organization, and the skill that goes into assembling them, these connections and sheer scale intrigue me. Huge bolts on a suspension bridge or the chain that lowers a ship’s anchor equally hold my attention.

I often wonder why I create my objects, whether functional or purely sculptural. This is all brought together as I work in the studio. It is there that I am able to establish the basis of my ideas. They do not come from only one subject, one experience or one single art form. My ideas come from the intrigue and beauty of every man’s achievements and accomplishments.
